Introductory Assignment

Use this introductory assignment while using Perseus. Follow the step-by-step instructions below. Follow the instructions and answer the questions in green.


Historical Overview

1. Choose "Historical Overview" from the Links menu.

2. You should now be at the Historical Overview Table of Contents.

3. Scroll through the table of contents to "6.25. The reforms of Solon."

4. Click once on the words "6.25. The reforms of Solon."

5. You should now be at the topic card for "6.25. The reforms of Solon."

6. Read this topic card and summarize it.

7. Click once on the "Next Page" arrow to move to "6.26. Solon and Democracy."

8. Read this topic card and summarize it.

Encyclopedia

9. Click once on the Gateway icon on the Navigator. Then click once on the "Tools & References" icon on the Gateway.

10. Under the bold "Encyclopedia" heading, click once on "Alphabetical Index."

11. Click once on the letter "S" from the alphabet at the bottom of the card.

12. Scroll through the list of "S" words until you find "Solon." Click once on the word "Solon."

13. Scroll down to the section on Solon's Athenian legislation.

14. Highlight "Hdt. 2.177" next to the phrase "his Athenian legislation."

15. With "Hdt. 2.177" highlighted, choose "Primary Text" from the "Links" menu.

16. You should now be at Herodotus' Book 2, sections 177.1-177.2.

17. Read all of section 2 and find the reference to the Egyptian connection and the records section.

18. To get back to the Encyclopedia entry for "Solon" and the section on Athenian legislation, click once on the "Go Back" arrow on your Navigator.

19. Highlight "Hdt. 1.29" then choose "Primary Text" from the Links menu.

20. Read the text and answer the following questions:

For how many years was Solon abroad?

Why did Solon travel abroad?

21. Choose "Encyclopedia" from the Links menu.

22. Click once on the letter "S" from the alphabet at the bottom of the card.

23. Scroll through the list of "S" words until you find "Sages." Click once on the word "Sages."

24. Highlight "Paus. 10.24.1" then choose "Primary Text" from the Links menu.

25. Read the list of seven sages and copy their two important maxims.

Browser Search

26. Choose "Browser" from the Links menu.

27. Click once inside the radio button next to "Coins."

28. Choose "Keywords" from the first pop-up menu button

29. Choose "Divinities" from the second pop-up menu button.

30. From the list of "Divinities," choose "Athena."

31. From the list of coins, click once on "Dewing 1589."

32. You will now be at the Catalog card for "Dewing 1589."

33. Look at the obverse and reverse of this coin by clicking once on the words in the "Views" section.

34. Answer the following questions about this coin:

Who is pictured on the obverse of the coin?

Who is pictured on the reverse of the coin?

Copy the three Greek letters in the right hand column.

What is this coin made of?

35. Choose "Browser" from the Links menu.

36. From the list of coins, click once on "Dewing 1594."

37. You will now be at the Catalog card for "Dewing 1594."

38. Look at the obverse and reverse of this coin by clicking once on the words in the "Views" section.

39. Answer the following questions about this coin:

Is Athena profiled or full faced?

Compare with the reverse of the former coin.

What is the coin made of?
