Colossi of Memnon

The approach to the necropolis of the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens is marked by two enormous statues of Amenhotep III. The colossi once stood before the first pylon of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep and may have stretched a quarter of a mile back toward the mountain. The colossi themselves are over sixty feet high and weigh over eight hundred tons each. They are carved from a rose-colored crystalline sandstone found near today's Cairo.
