Memphis

Memphis, located just a few miles south of Cairo, between Upper and Lower Egypt became the first capital in history under its founder, Menes. King Menes wore a combination crown, the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt, signifying his unification of Egypt about 5200 years ago.

One of the most important features of Memphis today is that it houses the largest alabaster statue in the world , the Sphinx (above) that represents Amenophis II, and a colossal statue of Ramesses II (right) made of crystallized limestone. It weighs about 80 tons and once stood at the entrance to the Temple of Ptah.
