This circular building was used to hold gladiatorial fights for the entertainment of the populace. Slaves, often captured in battle from other countries, would be given weapons and made to fight in the central arena. Sometimes they would fight each other, and sometimes they would fight hungry lions or other animals. The stadium seating ensured that even with thousands of citizens in the building at once, everyone had a good view. The complex tunnel system underneath the seats, combined with the circular shape of the amphitheater, allowed the entire building to be empty less than fifteen minutes after being filled to capacity. |
