Often, a Roman city didn't have enough drinkable water available on site. In these cases, miles-long gently sloping aqueducts, would be constructed from a nearby mountain to conduct water from a mountain stream gradually downhill to the city for use in the fountains and baths. These stone structures were marvels of ancient engineering with their multi-level columns, and many are still intact and functional today. |
