Part I

Note: There are many different ways to go back to web pages you have viewed using various browser menus and buttons. One method is suggested in this exercise but please use the method with which you are most comfortable.

1. Open your browser and go to the Perseus web site, http://www.perseus.tufts.edu.

2. Go to the Search box, type in "Europa" and hit return.

3. Click on the "English Index," which is the top choice on the left-hand side.

4. Type "Europa" into the Search box in the middle of the screen and click on the Search button. The menu next to "Search" should be set on "Everything."

5. When the search results appear, scroll to the bottom of the page.

How many entries are listed for "Europa"? _____

6. Go back to the top of the page and narrow your search by selecting "Ovid" from the menu next to "Search." Then click on the "Search" button.

How many times is Europa mentioned in Ovid? _____
In which books of the Metamorphoses is she mentioned? __________

7. Go to the "Search Perseus" box on the left side of page and type in "Europa" and hit return.

8. Click on the arrow next to "Perseus Encyclopedia entries."

9. Click on the first listing for "Europa." Read the entries and answer the following questions:

Who was her father? __________
Who were her sons? __________

10. Go back using the Back button on your browser and click on the arrow next to "Vases."

11. Click on the vase name "Mississippi 1977.3.73."

What is the type or "ware" of this vase? __________
What is its shape? __________
What are the dates for this vase? __________

12. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase.

13. Click on the image archive number, 1991.01.1159, next to "Main panel: Europa on bull" to view this image.

14. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the Perseus Lookup Tool search for "Europa."

15. Under Vases, click on the vase name "RISD 22.216."

What is the type or "ware" of this vase? __________
What is its shape? __________
What are the dates for this vase? __________

16. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase.

17. Click on the image archive number, 1990.03.0573, next to "Main panel: Europa on the bull" to view this image.

18. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for "Europa."

19. Click on the arrow next to "Coins."

20. Click on any entry entitled "Dewing."

What material is this coin made of? __________
Where was this coin minted? __________
Is Europa on the obverse or the reverse? __________

21. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the archive number next to obverse or reverse to view the coin to view the image.

Part II

Select a character from ancient Greek mythology, e.g., Eros, Zeus, Aphrodite, etc. Write your character's name here: _________________. Then begin this exercise from the Perseus home page, http://www.perseus.tufts.edu.

1. At the Perseus home page, type the name of your character into the Search box and hit return.

2. Click on the "English Index," which is the top choice on the left-hand side of the page.

3. Type the name of your character into the Search box in the middle of the screen and click on the "Search" button. The menu next to "Search" should be set on "Everything."

4. When the search results appear, scroll to the bottom of the page.

List two (2) ancient authors who mention this character in their text. You may need to go to the next page to answer this question.

5. Go to the "Search Perseus" box on the left side of the page, type in the name of your character and hit return.

6. Click on the arrow next to "Perseus Encyclopedia entries."

7. Click on a link to an Encyclopedia entry and write down two (2) facts about your character.

8. Go back using the Back button on your browser and click on the arrow next to "Vases."

Are there any entries? _______

9. If so, click on a vase name to view its catalog information.

Write down the vase name, e.g., Boston 03.810, for the vase you selected.

10. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images for vases from the following collections: Berlin, Boston, Harvard, Louvre, Mississippi, Toledo, RISD, Tampa and Philadelphia.

11. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for your character.

12. Click on the arrow next to "Sculpture."

13. If so, view one and write down the name, e.g., Athens, NM Br. 15161, for the sculpture you selected.

14. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this sculpture. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images for sculptures from the Berlin, Boston and Louvre collections.

15. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for your character.

16. Click on the arrow next to "Coins."

17. If so, view one and write down the name, e.g., Dewing 2780, for the coin you selected. ______________

18. Click on "Images" to see a list of images for this coin. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images of coins from the Dewing collection.
