1. Open your browser and go to the Perseus web site http://www.perseus.tufts.edu.

2. Go to the Search box, type in "boxing" and hit return.

3. Click on the arrow next to "Vases."

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images for vases from the following collections: Berlin, Boston, Harvard, Louvre, Mississippi, Toledo, RISD, Tampa and Philadelphia.

4. Scroll down and click on the vase name "Toledo 1956.58."

5. Scroll down and read the description of Side B.

6. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and view some of the Side B images by clicking on the image archive numbers.

7. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for "boxing."

8. Scroll down and click on the vase name "Toledo 1961.26."

9. Scroll down and read the description of Side B.

10. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and view some of the Side B images by clicking on the image archive numbers.

Assignment
Following the class divisions below, select two (2) vases on which sporting events appear. Make note of the vase name (e.g., Harvard 1925.30.12), ware, shape, date and description of the scene on each vase you select in the chart below. Be prepared to share and show these results with the other members of the class.

If your last name begins with,

    • A-F follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 above to search "wrestling" vases.
    • G-H follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 above to search "jumping" vases.
    • I-P follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 above to search "throwing" vases.
    • Q-Z follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 above to search "javelin" vases.
