Introduction to Perseus: Part I

Note: There are many different ways to go back to web pages you have viewed using various browser menus and buttons. One method is suggested in this exercise but please use the method with which you are most comfortable.

1. Open your browser and go to the Perseus web site, http://www.perseus.tufts.edu.

2. Go to the Search box, type in "Athena" and hit return.

3. Click on the "English Index," which is the top choice on the left-hand side.

4. Type "Athena" into the Search box in the middle of the screen and click on the Search button.

5. When the search results appear, scroll to the bottom of the page.

How many entries are listed for "Athena"? _____

6. Go back to the top of the page and in the area labeled "Search," narrow you search by selecting "Homer" under the menu next to "Search." Then click on the "Search" button.

How many times is Athena mentioned in Homer's Odyssey?
How many times in Book 1 of the Odyssey is she mentioned?

Why doesn't Perseus list the occurrences of "Athena" in Homer's Iliad? In the Iliad translation on the Perseus web site, "Athena" is written as "Athene", an acceptable alternative spelling. If you want, do an English Index search for "Athene."

7. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the Perseus Lookup Tool search for "Athena."

8. Click on the arrow next to the "Perseus Encyclopedia entries."

9. Click on the first listing for "Athena." Read the entries and answer the following questions:

Who was said to have brought her up? ___________
What giant did she flay? __________
Who saw her naked and what happened to him? ___________________

10. Click on your browser's Back button menu and then click on the arrow next to "Vases."

11. Click on the vase name "Berlin F 1704."

What is the type or "ware" of this vase? __________
What is its shape? __________
What are the dates for this vase? __________
In what region was it found? __________

12. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase.

13. Click on the image archive number, 1992.07.0042, next to "Side A, top panel: birth of Athena."

What other gods can be seen on this vase? (Hint: Go back to the vase description.) ______________

14. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for "Athena."

19. Click on the arrow next to "Coins."

20. Click on the entry entitled "Dewing 1134."

21. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase.

22. Click on the image archive number for the side on which Athena appears.

23. From the "Go" menu in Netscape or from the "File" Menu in Internet Explorer, select "Perseus Lookup Tool" to return to the search for "Athena."

24. Click on the arrow next to "Sculpture."

25. Click on the sculpture name "Boston 54.145."

26. Click on "Images" and then view the images for this sculpture.

27. From the menu on the left side of the screen, click on "Art and Archaeology."

28. Click on the "Vase Catalog" icon.

29. Click on "Keyword."

30. Click on "Mythological Scenes."

31. Find two (2) mythological scenes that you can show the class.

Write down the vase names and a description of the vases you select. Select vases from the following collections: Berlin, Boston, Louvre, Harvard, Mississippi, Toledo, RISD, Tampa and Philadelphia.
