Introduction to Perseus: Part II

Below you will research the ancient Greek hero Theseus. You can easily substitute the name of another hero, e.g., Perseus, Herakles, Achilles, for Theseus in the exercise below.

Note: There are many different ways to go back to web pages you have viewed using various browser menus and buttons. One method is suggested in this exercise but please use the method with which you are most comfortable.

1. Open your browser and go to the Perseus web site, http://www.perseus.tufts.edu.

2. Go to the Search box, type in "Theseus" and hit return.

3. Click on the "English Index," which is the top choice on the left-hand side.

4. Type "Theseus" into the Search box in the middle of the screen and click on the Search button.

5. When the search results appear, scroll to the bottom of the page.

How many entries are listed for "Theseus"? _____
List two (2) ancient authors who mention this character.

6. Go to the "Search Perseus" box on the left side of page and type in "Theseus" and hit return.

Encyclopedia

7. Click on the arrow next to the "Perseus Encyclopedia entries."

8. Click on the listing for "Theseus."

Write down 2 facts about this character.

Vase

9. Go back using the Back button on your browser and click on the arrow next to "Vases."

Are there any entries? _______

10. If so, click on a vase name to view its catalog information. Write down the vase name, e.g., Boston 03.810, for the vase you selected.

11. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this vase. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images for vases from the following collections: Berlin, Boston, Harvard, Louvre, Mississippi, Toledo, RISD, Tampa and Philadelphia.

If there are no images or if you are unable to view the images, write down the vase name (e.g., Austin 1980.32) and a brief description (e.g., Attic Black Figure with Athena and flute players) of the vase.

Sculpture

12. Go back to your search for "Theseus" and click on the arrow next to "Sculpture."

13. If so, click on a sculpture name to view its catalog information. Write down the sculpture name, e.g., Athens, NM Br. 15161, for the sculpture you selected.

14. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this sculpture. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images for sculptures from the Berlin, Boston and Louvre collections.

If there are no images or if you are unable to view the images, write down the sculpture name (e.g. Athens, NM Br. 15161) and a brief description (e.g., bronze sculpture of male deity from the Classical period) of the sculpture.

Coin

15. Go back to your search for "Theseus" and click on the arrow next to "Coins."

Are there any entries? _______

16. If so, click on a coin name to view its catalog information. Write down the coin name, e.g., Dewing 2780, for the coin you selected.

17. Click on "Images" at the top of the page to view a list of images for this coin. Look at an image.

N.B. Due to copyright restrictions, over the Internet you can view only images of coins from the Dewing collection.

If the only images are from museums to which we do not have rights, write down the coin name (e.g. Dewing 2780) and a brief description (e.g., gold coin minted in Cyrene with Nike on obverse and Zeus on reverse) of the coin.
