Five-Day Lesson Plan For
Elementary Latin Students
by Anne Starkey, University
of Massachusetts - Amherst
Introduction
The following lesson plan corresponds with
chapters 1, 4, 19, 20, 21, and 30 of The Oxford Latin Course
Part I and Part II by Maurice Balme and James Morwood.
This plan supplements the Roman
Living Website. Essays, readings, and several pictures
appear throughout the site. Pages may be printed out as useful
handouts for students. Teachers might find it useful to assign
the Website to be viewed for homework. Questions and translation
exercises are also provided to encourage class discussion.
Goal
The goal of this five-day lesson plan is
to introduce the beginning Latin student to elements of Roman
culture by tracing the development of Roman housing and living
situations. Lessons on water supply and heating are included
to emphasize the achievements of Roman engineering and for comparison
to contemporary systems of water and heat distribution.
