Five-Day Lesson Plan For
Elementary Latin Students
by Anne Starkey, University
of Massachusetts - Amherst
Day Five
Building Blocks
Fifty-Minute Lesson Plan
Materials
- Transparencies
- Computer with Internet connection
- Bring all necessary construction
materials. Have students bring in materials too.
Introduction
- Pass out handout. Have students
read it aloud and answer the questions as they read.
- Search through the Roman Living
Website and have the
students try to identify the different building materials and
innovations. Have the students find examples of rounded arches,
vaults, concrete, opus incertum, opus reticulatum,
opus quadratum.
- Have student groups decide
what materials they are going to use to construct their buildings.
Activity
- Have groups work together and
construct their buildings. Keep the scale relatively small. They
should have worked their plans and designs out already and in
class. Some may have started at home. The landscape should be
finished at this point.
- Have each group write a paragraph
about their project and label each room. They should include
information on what amenities were available, who would live
in their building, and comments on tradition or innovation.
- Have each group present at
the end of class.
- If there is not enough time,
have the students present today and let them finish their buildings
at the end of classes in following weeks.
- This will be a nice project
to have on display for parents night and for other Latin
students to see.
