Forward to the Past
The Structure of
the Course
The streamlined and edited version of Forward
to the Past now consists of nine chapters:
- Rome's early beginnings
- Rome's seven kings
- The Roman constitution
- The Roman army
- Vocabulary drills
- Sport in ancient times
- A man like Julius Caesar
- Abduction in stories of ancient Rome
- Vocabulary drills
Chapters 1-4 and 6-8 introduce the Roman
civilisation as a historical reality and suggests continually
its influence on our present day lives. The course takes into
account that purposeful communication is dependent on sufficient
knowledge and understanding, a reason too why the course starts
at the early beginnings of Rome. The past is presented within
a framework that learners can identify with while similarities
and differences between then and now form the basis of discussions.
Each topic consists of a section that focuses
on the influence of Latin on the English language. English words
deriving from Latin are explored, discussed and used in sentences.
Chapters 5 & 9 aim primarily at the drilling of new vocabulary.
Forward to the Past is based on the communicative approach and includes
writing, speaking, reading and listening
activities. The lessons allow for individual participation as
well as for participation in pairs and groups.
