Students should have a solid understanding of how to use Perseus and should be familiar with the vocabulary of Perseus before attempting this assignment. For a glossary of Perseus terms, see the Quick Start System Perseus Glossary & Canonical Abbreviations.

Part I

Locate and read Homer's Iliad, Book 24, lines 477-550.

Part II

Compose a short essay in response to the following:

  • How would you stage the scene you have just read?
  • Describe the complex, contradictory nature of Achilles based on this reading alone.
  • Briefly describe why this scene is so powerful.

Part III

Search for visual images to illustrate this passage from Homer's Iliad, Book 24.

Hint: Use the Browser keyword search. Choose "Mythological scenes" from the second pop-up menu.

Part IV

Create a Path, using text, images and your commentary to illustrate your responses to Part II above. When creating the Path, consider the three (3) characters involved in the scene.

Hint: For help creating a Path, review the Knowledge Builder "How to Create a Path" then create your own.
