Early Man

Classroom Activities

Our early ancestors, with their often-elegant images on rocky walls, inspired us to create our own cave art.

Getting Started

To better understand the art of our earliest ancestors, we watched two videos:

  • LASCAUX REVISITED
  • ROCK ART

We also read an article in ART AND MAN called "Pre-Historic Art."

Project One

Each student created a cave art drawing, sometimes drawing the animals in action. We used charcoal and colored chalk, shading with our fingers.

Project Two

Next, we used sticks and twigs to make primitive painting tools.

Project Three

In the final project, we used our tools to make cave paintings. We painted on crumpled brown paper to simulate stone walls.
