Installing Perseus 2.0 (Macintosh) on a Two-Gig Drive
Below are instructions for installing Perseus 2.0 on a two-gig drive. Many thanks to Jim Lowe for the partition and disk statistics.

These instructions have been used successfully by numerous educators. They would have us tell you that the installation process takes about four (4) hours. Please contact us with comments, questions, and suggestions at ctcweb@ablemedia.com.

Thank you.
Wendy E. Owens

IMPORTANT: Do not change the names of any of the files from the Perseus CDs. Do not make up names for the gig drive's partitions, only use the names: Perseus Disk 1, Perseus Disk 2, Perseus Disk 3, Perseus Disk 4.

1. Using the accompanying software, partition your 2 gig drive into four parts. Each partition should have one of the following names: Perseus Disk 1, Perseus Disk 2, Perseus Disk 3, Perseus Disk 4. Follow the directions below to determine what size each partition should be.

IMPORTANT: Do not partition the drive into four equal sections.

2. Partition Perseus Disk 1 to approximately same size as the Perseus Disk 1 CD. Here is a chart of partition splits that we have devised:

 Disk

 Partition Size

Data on Disk

 Remaining Space
 Perseus Disk 1  690 MB  652.8 MB  18.9 MB
 Perseus Disk 2  360 MB  281.6 MB  68.9 MB
 Perseus Disk 3  383 MB  295.8 MB  75.1 MB
 Perseus Disk 4  382 MB  302.3 MB  68.7 MB

(To determine how much information each CD holds, put the CD into the CD drive of your computer. Open the CD by clicking twice in the Perseus Disk icon. Look for the amount at the top of the CD's window. To see the sizes of files and the CDs, choose "Views" from the control panel under the Apple menu. Click inside the boxes next to "Calculate folder sizes" and "Show disk info in header" so that an 'X' appears in each box.)

IMPORTANT: You will only be installing the numbered files from Perseus Disks 2, 3 & 4, i.e., files that use only numbers (with a letter perhaps at the end) in their title, 1990.01v. The number files contain images only. Since you are using a 2 gig drive you do not need the extra files that are used in place of Perseus Disk 1 when using each CD individually.

Add up the file sizes for each of the files that uses words for their titles and subtract this from the total amount of information on the CD. Partition the drive section to meet this need.

3. Once you have your drive partitioned, put the Perseus Disk 1 CD into the CD drive of your computer. Open the CD by clicking twice in the Perseus Disk 1 icon. Drag and drop *all* of the Perseus Disk 1 files from the CD onto the Perseus Disk 1 drive partition.

IMPORTANT: Do not put any Perseus Disk 1, 2, 3 or 4 files into a folder you create yourself. When you have finished loading the CD's onto the hard drive partitions, they should look just like the CDs when the window is open. (The exception is that Perseus Disk 2, 3 & 4 will only show files with number titles.)

4. Put the Perseus Disks 2, 3, then 4 CDs into the CD drive of your computer. Open the CD by clicking twice in the Perseus Disks 2, 3 & 4 icons. Drag and drop only the numbered titled files of the Perseus Disks 2, 3 & 4 files from the CD onto the Perseus Disks 2, 3 & 4 drive partitions.

Once all of the files are loaded, drag "Local Stacks" from Perseus Disk 1 onto your local hard drive. You will open Perseus from this file on the local hard drive and not on Perseus Disk 1.

Keep in mind that changes can be made to the files on the 2 gig drive as the disk is not locked.

IMPORTANT: Launch Perseus using the Perseus Player application in the Local Stacks file on the local hard drive. I strongly recommend putting an alias of the Perseus Player application on the desktop. If you do not launch Perseus, by double clicking on Perseus Player, your computer may use another version of HyperCard to run the program. Perseus will not run properly using another version of HyperCard.
