Roman Worship of Native Deities
The native deities worshipped by the Romans in northern Britain were not national gods of the Celts as some would see, but gods associated with a particular area i.e. worship of Belatucadrus in northwest Roman Britain and Cocidius in northeast Roman Britain. Belatucadrus and Cocidius were worshipped on the frontier in the north and their areas of worship overlap but they are not found anywhere else in Britain or for that matter on the continent. One could argue that these two deities could have counterparts from other parts of Britain. Isis and Mithras were eastern deities accepted into the Roman pantheon and they found worshippers beyond the original sphere of their worship. The standard Roman deities such as Mars or IOM were the major religions of the Roman army as well as Jupiter being the head of the state religion. The assimilation of Belatucadrus, Cocidius, Isis and Mithras into the Roman pantheon shows the tolerance and adaptability of Roman culture.
