Conclusion

Preparing teachers to teach Latin is a multi-partner, multi-step, multi-year process involving college instructors, veteran teachers and supportive administrators. The process begins with the first college Latin class and ends when the beginning teacher moves out of probationary status. We learn to teach by watching our own Latin teachers use various strategies, through the mentoring of veterans and the feedback of administrators. When this process is shortened or one prong is eliminated, beginning teachers are less likely to survive to become veterans. College instructors, veterans and administrators who are willing to invest fully in beginning teachers will realize worthwhile dividends.
