Installation
& Use
WORD195D.EXE is a self-extracting DOS EXE file that you can
download as a binary file. It runs line-oriented without fancy
screens or graphics.
- Click on the words "WORD195D.EXE"
above to begin downloading the software.
- When prompted, choose to save
the file, "WORD195D.EXE," to disk. It
is usually good practice to make a subdirectory and to copy the
WORD195D.EXE into it, then run WORDS from that subdirectory.
The .EXE file, once executed on your machine, will produce about
6 MB of program and data files.
- The WORD195D.EXE may be discarded after installation.
Upon installation, the following files
are installed in the subdirectory you created and are sufficient
to run the program:
WORDS.EXE -- The recommended (minimized) program
INFLECTS.SEC
ADDONS.
UNIQUES.
DICTFILE.GEN
INDXFILE.GEN
STEMFILE.GEN
WORDHMOD.HLP
WORDHMDV.HLP
WORDSDOS.TXT
The main program is WORDS.EXE. Run WORDS.EXE
to perform Latin-to-English word translations. With amo
as input, the WORDS output looks like this:
=>amo
am.o V 1 1 PRES ACTIVE IND 1 S X
amo, amare, amavi, amatus
love, like; fall in love with; be fond of;
have a tendency to
For help reading WORDS' output, please
review the Codes and Example Output documents below:
The file WORDSDOC.TXT provides program
documentation and there is a HTML version that is also accessible
from WORDSDOC.HTM.
MORE195D.EXE
You can also download MORE195D.EXE for DOS that contains:
WORDSMAX.EXE -- The full program, not minimized
MEANINGS.EXE -- Delivering only meanings, hardcoded
WORDSDOC.TXT -- ASCII DOS documentation text file
TEST500. -- Test file of 500 lines of Latin
System Requirements
WORDS for DOS runs on a IBM-compatible
PC, 386 or better, running DOS. WORDS is disk oriented, so a
fast disk, a RAMDISK, or caching helps. It requires as much memory
as possible, or it will raise (somewhat recoverable) STORAGE_ERROR.
WORDSMIN is recommended to reduce this problem.
Meanings Only
There are academic situations in which
it would be inappropriate for the student to have access to the
parsed forms information in WORDS, but in which the professor
might allow access to simple meanings. For this situation a modification
has been made to WORDS producing a program called MEANINGS.
This version outputs ONLY word meanings and permits the display
of the dictionary form or lemma, which mat be appropriate and
permissible for the intended use. If anyone requires a version
that suppresses the dictionary form, let me know.

This program is distributed without
obligation, but the developer would appreciate comments and suggestions.
Feedback is invited. If there is a problem in installing

word is omitted from the dictionary, let me know. Please comment

I am not a Latin scholar, only
a dictionary hacker. While I try to reply to all messages and
do the best I can, do not expect much in the way of translations
from me, nor anything that I (and you) cannot get from the program.
I try to answer promptly. If
you do not get an answer, please check the return address on
your message. I seem to get an unusual number of messages in
which the return is not set properly and the answer bounces back
with "No Such Address." |
