Drilling Bit-by-bit Strikes Silver on CTCWeb

MEDFORD, MA - February 20, 2001 - Prof. Margaret Phillips finds silver with her Latin drills. Phillips, a professor of Classics at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, is this month's AbleMedia Silver Chalice winner for Online Latin Drills published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). "Prof. Phillips has developed a superior set of resources that Latin students at all levels can use to learn and practice basic Latin language structure and vocabulary," said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. "There is no need to tote a book around since students can access these drills from any computer with an Internet connection."

In Online Latin Drills, Phillips provides 96 online drills to reinforce students' knowledge of the material they learned in her Latin class. Using multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank formats, Phillips' drills build students' knowledge of Latin noun and verb endings, singular and plural endings, as well as vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. "In an inflected language like Latin, where word endings carry much more meaning than in languages like English, it's important to be able to recognize instantly the different endings," Phillips said.

Volumes One and Two of Phillips' Online Latin Drills are available on CTCWeb. This spring, CTCWeb will post Volume Three of Phillips' work. Once all volumes are posted, educators and students will have access to online drills that thoroughly cover the basic structure of the Latin language. "I am happy to have my drills included in CTCWeb's repository of online Classics tools," Phillips said. "Availability on the Web makes drills like these instantly accessible all over the world to do what computers are so good at."
