Top Educators from CT, OK, and VA Win Gold Chalice on CTCWeb

Needham, MA- March 1, 2006 – Winners of AbleMedia’s annual Gold Chalice Awards were announced today by the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, www.ablemedia.com/ctcweb). The winners are Elizabeth Tylawsky, a Latin teacher at Norwich Free Academy in Connecticut; Margaret Cotter-Lynch, an Assistant Professor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University; and Dr. James Hedrick, a current principal at Green Hope High School in Frederick County, Virginia, and Camille Hedrick, a teacher at Lufkin Road Year Round Middle School with over 20 years of classroom experience. “With deep respect, we honor educators who have shared their valuable knowledge with millions of their neighbors around the globe through AbleOne’s Classics Technology Center on the Web,” said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief.

In Jeeps and Hummers in Antiquity, Tylawsky merges serious research with seriously entertaining historical figures. Literary evidence from Cicero and Horace, along with historical evidence, highlights the place of conspicuous consumption in Rome during the 1st century CE. She emphasizes transportation as her mobile metaphor for consumption and authored a well-researched, straightforward article that is supplemented with artwork. Tylawsky entertainingly illustrates the showiness of the age and gives students and teachers an innovative look at a surprisingly modern ancient desire to show off one’s vehicle that makes the ancient Romans come alive.

In Teaching Ancient Biography, Cotter-Lynch’s remarkable work offers teachers and students well-crafted lecture notes, historical background, and in-class discussion questions. She illustrates the ups and downs of public life through her in-depth discussions of major historical figures found in biographies written by Plutarch and Suetonius. Her pedagogical materials are both well researched and extremely accessible. Cognizant of the importance of using technology in the classroom, Cotter-Lynch emphasizes how visual materials can further promote student learning, bringing together contemporary technology with ancient texts. The breadth of Cotter-Lynch’s work provides teachers with exceptional materials immediately ready for use in any high-school or university classroom.

In The Latin Teacher: A Primer for Survival and Success, Hedrick and Hedrick advise both new and veteran teachers on how they can work together to ensure success for Latin programs’ retention rates. Using humor and concrete examples from their own experience and expertise, they provide solid suggestions about the roles of the different members of the educational community in relation to the new teachers. Instead of feeling isolated or lost, first-year teachers also can rely on the Hedricks’ article to realize what kinds of advice they should ask for. Hedrick and Hedrick’s characters, “Nellie Newbie” and “Vera Veteran” and their growing relationship show how teachers should relate to one another to improve their experiences for both themselves and their students.
