MEDFORD, MA - March 6, 2002 The vulgate of love, lust, power, and betrayal from high atop Mount Olympus is the Greek Gods: The Olympus Twelve published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). “You too can join the ‘god-a-month’ club and learn the facts, features, and eccentricities of the ancient Greek gods,” said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. “Any modern soap opera or Beltway scandal pales in comparison to the troubles and triumphs ancient Greek authors reported about their gods and goddesses.” Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of Love, is the first of twelve Greek gods and goddesses to be profiled on CTCWeb. The CTCWeb editors have compiled four assignments that students can do to learn the mythological history of Aphrodite, from her birth from the sea to her adulterous affair with the god of War. Included with each assignment are numerous links to primary texts and ancient artifacts that depict Aphrodite in her role as the goddess of Love. A new god or goddess will be profiled each a month using a variety of assignments and numerous links to primary text, archaeological evidence, and secondary source materials. “If you uncover a squalid detail or affirmative trait of an ancient Greek god or goddess, let us know so we can share this information to help others understand ancient Greek culture, society, and religion through the study of their gods,” Owens said. Each week AbleOne’s sponsor, AbleMedia, salutes contributors for outstanding submissions to the AbleOne Consortium (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/consortium/), the CTCWeb Showcase (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/), and CTCWeb Netshots™ (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/netshots.html). Each receives the Bronze Chalice award. AbleMedia awards Silver Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the month. At the end of each year, AbleMedia awards Gold Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the year.
