'Texas Rose' Pedals Latin Wisdom on CTCWeb

MEDFORD, MA - March 15, 2000 - Once the only Latin teacher in Abilene, Texas, Rose Williams is today a renown scholar and this week's Bronze Chalice winner for her Latin phrases and mottoes published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). "Here are a few 'verba sapienti', or 'words to the wise', from a wise educator," said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. "Ms. Rose's Collection of Latin Phrases & Mottoes are commonly used in all types of situations. They may even help you decide which college to attend."

"I have taught Latin for forty years, and for a number of those years I was the only Latin teacher in a city of 110,000 which has three small colleges," Williams said. "I have collected the material I use to teach through long study and laborious correspondence with other Latinists. Today, if I need information, it is as close as my computer." Williams' work is online too, as part of a growing collection of free educational resources and materials on CTCWeb.

Available on CTCWeb are 76 university mottoes and common Latin phrases with translations. Ms. Rose began collecting the mottoes and phrases to use in weekly vocabulary tests. "Students love finding these phrases in newspapers and their other textbooks," she said. In addition to the phrases and mottoes, CTCWeb provides examples of samplers, by Ms. Rose's students, embroidered with Latin mottoes and phrases.

Scholarly Resource

Williams recognizes the value of sharing her work with other educators and students via CTCWeb. "Collecting information and sharing it through the Internet provides a wonderful resource for all scholars, but it is especially useful to those of us in Classical Studies because in many parts of the world people with our interests are few and far between," Williams said. "I am glad to share my materials via CTCWeb and happy to receive those of others."

Each week AbleOne’s sponsor, AbleMedia, salutes contributors for outstanding submissions to the AbleOne Consortium (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/consortium/), the CTCWeb Showcase (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/), and CTCWeb Netshots™ (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/netshots.html). Each receives the Bronze Chalice award. AbleMedia awards Silver Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the month.
