MEDFORD, MA - March 21, 2001 - Silver lines the path to the top of Mt. Olympus charted by Lee Burnett, a Latin teacher and Technology Coordinator at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Burnett is this month's AbleMedia Silver Chalice winner for Olympus, published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). "Lee leads his sixth grade students far beyond the earthly realm of text based projects and into the ethereal Ethernet to bring the ancient Greek deities down to earth," said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. In Olympus, Burnett provides descriptions and directions for two projects; one involves researching a single god or goddess and the other is part of a nine-week online course called "Zeus Speaks." Project components include creative writing, oral presentations, trivia contests, and original artwork. Examples of student works are available on CTCWeb. "Olympus is a growing and evolving resource that is much more than an electronic bulletin board for my students' work," Burnett said. "It is a gathering of their collective knowledge from which they study. It is also a gathering of information about how to use the array technological tools at their disposal to maintain the skills they are developing and apply them to other subjects." As infrastructure for each Olympus project, Burnett furnishes project instructions, requirements, grading procedures, and a list of tools and resources students can use to complete their projects. In addition, Burnett provides students with directions for using a word processing program, an electronic slide presentation program, desktop scanners, and email. "I'm excited that my students and I can contribute to CTCWeb, and pleased that this connection will draw my students closer to this community and prompt them to use its rich resources," Burnett said. "They are thrilled to see their work have an impact outside Germantown Academy, and are inspired to do even more!" Each week AbleOne’s sponsor, AbleMedia, salutes contributors for outstanding submissions to the AbleOne Consortium (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/consortium/), the CTCWeb Showcase (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/), and CTCWeb Netshots™ (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/netshots.html). Each receives the Bronze Chalice award. AbleMedia awards Silver Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the month.
