AbleMedia CEO Appointed to Commerce Department Advisory Committee Needham, MA - May 3, 2006 – The US Commerce Department has appointed AbleMedia President & CEO Wendy E. Owens to its Industry Trade Advisory Committee on Information and Communications Technologies, Services, and Electronic Commerce (ITAC-8). Owens will advise US Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez and US Trade Representative Rob Portman on the views and interests of US businesses in the information technology, communications, and electronic commerce industries. In a letter to Owens, the two senior administration officials wrote: “Your industry expertise is critical to the Secretary of Commerce and United States Trade representative in pursuing trade objectives that reflect the concerns and interests of the private sector. We appreciate your willingness to devote your time and effort to the work of our jointly administered Industry Trade Advisory Committees.” In accepting the appointment, Owens pointed out that knowledge is a major United States export, noting that the US exports approximately $10 billion per year in educational services alone. She added: “I am particularly interested in addressing the creation, dissemination, management, and protection of all types of intellectual property that constitutes the knowledge base of our country. Because knowledge drives the US and world economies, I believe access to knowledge via the Internet and its protection must be a primary focus of my efforts on the ITAC. In particular, US trade policy must advance US companies’ efforts to export their knowledge and services using the Internet while assuring the protection of these invaluable assets.” ITAC-8 is charged with advising on trade issues in the information technology, communications, electronics, electronic commerce, and medical equipment sectors, among others. The Committee is a key element in the US government’s decision-making process on trade policy and is an integral link between industry and the United States Government. This is a particularly active period in trade negotiations on both a regional and multilateral-basis as talks continue in the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), and in a number of country-specific free-trade agreements (FTAs). The ITACs provide a unique public-private forum to ensure industry has a voice in formulating the trade policy of the United States. Also serving on the advisory committee are representatives of IBM, Intel, Boeing, AT&T, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, General Motors, Dell, Intuit, and other major corporations and trade associations. “I am particularly pleased that our company has been chosen to sit along side these respected companies as we formulate US trade policy,” Owens said. Owens also is a Director of UniStates, LLC (http://www.unistates.com), a materials technology company and source of Reflexive Materials Technologies (RMT™ technologies), and she is the Manager of Hexas LLC, a private US research company.
