Free Personal Latin Assistant on CTCWeb Dedham, MA- September 206, 2006 – Do you feel like you need an assistant to get through all of your Latin translation? CTCWeb has the perfect one for you thanks to Alexei Grishin, a computer programmer and Latin graduate student at the Harvard Extension School. Grishin is this week’s AbleMedia Bronze Chalice winner for his Latin Assistant published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). “Some may say you can’t improve on the most used Latin-to-English dictionary on the Internet,” said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. “But everyone could use a little assistance and CTCWeb has just the assistant Latin students around the globe need that actually improves upon a Classical classic thanks to Alexei Grishin.” Grishin’s downloadable application works with CTCWeb’s most popular program, WORDS Latin-to-English dictionary by William Whitaker. Like WORDS, Grishin’ Latin Assistant is available for free on CTCWeb. As a big fan of Whitaker’s WORDS, Grishin created his Latin Assistant to improve the accessibility of the dictionary. Combining his skills as a computer programming and interest in Classical languages, Grishin produced an application that provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for WORDS to make WORDS program even more user-friendly. With Latin Assistant, WORDS users can explore the WORDS dictionary, save the dictionary entries they find, and locate the translation of the Latin word for which they are looking more quickly and easily. Grishin explains his route to the development of his Latin Assistant by saying, “I am a professional developer of multimedia applications. At the same time, I am primarily educated as a philologist (presently working on a Master’s in Classics at the Harvard Extension School). Grishin adds, “It is one of my deepest regrets that I never get a chance to bring together these two areas of expertise. So, this little Visual Basic application hopefully is a foreboder of something bigger and more exciting.” CTCWeb, also bridging the gap between Classics and technology, proudly adds Grishin’s application to its resources for studies of Latin. Each week AbleOne’s sponsor, AbleMedia, salutes contributors for outstanding submissions to the AbleOne Consortium (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/consortium/), the CTCWeb Showcase (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/), and CTCWeb Netshots™ (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/netshots.html). Each receives the Bronze Chalice award. AbleMedia awards Silver Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the month. At the end of each year, AbleMedia awards Gold Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the year.
